Background of the Study
Web-based cataloging systems have become indispensable in modern academic libraries by providing streamlined access to a wide array of resources. At Taraba State Polytechnic, these systems allow users to search for, locate, and reserve books and digital materials seamlessly via the internet (Amina, 2023). The emphasis on enhancing user experience (UX) through intuitive search features, real-time updates, and responsive design elements is critical in ensuring that users can efficiently navigate the catalog. Improved cataloging systems contribute significantly to academic productivity, reducing time spent on resource retrieval and promoting self-sufficiency among students. However, issues such as system downtime, outdated interfaces, and data inconsistencies can negatively impact the overall UX (Bello, 2024). This study seeks to evaluate the impact of web-based cataloging systems on library UX by examining system performance, user satisfaction, and the effectiveness of search functionalities. The investigation aims to uncover operational gaps and propose enhancements to support more effective information retrieval in a dynamic academic environment (Usman, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Although web-based cataloging systems are designed to enhance resource accessibility at Taraba State Polytechnic, users report several challenges that compromise the overall UX. Frequent system lags, inconsistent search results, and outdated interface designs hinder efficient resource retrieval and frustrate users (Amina, 2023). These deficiencies undermine the potential benefits of a digital catalog and negatively impact user satisfaction. The study seeks to identify the key technical and operational issues affecting the cataloging system and to assess their impact on the user experience, thereby guiding necessary system improvements (Bello, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the effectiveness of the web-based cataloging system.
To identify the challenges impacting user experience.
To recommend improvements for enhanced system performance.
Research Questions:
How effective is the current cataloging system in facilitating resource access?
What technical issues hinder optimal system performance?
What improvements can enhance the overall UX?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the critical role of web-based cataloging systems in delivering effective library services. By identifying key operational challenges and their impact on UX, the findings will assist library administrators in optimizing system functionality and user interface design, ultimately leading to improved resource discovery and academic performance (Usman, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is confined to the web-based cataloging system at Taraba State Polytechnic and does not include other library service components or physical catalog systems.
Definitions of Terms:
Web-Based Cataloging System: An online system for organizing and searching library materials.
User Experience (UX): The overall satisfaction with and ease of system interaction.
Resource Retrieval: The process of locating and accessing library materials.
